New high-quality camera systems, new colour imagery - under development

A new high-quality aurora patrol camera has been installed at Campania (about 5 kilometres north of Richmond) in southern Tasmania. A second nearly identical camera system is also under development and will be installed at a different site to increase the probability of recording cloud-free images of the southern horizon. The new camera system is a trial system and a live feed of the images from the Campania camera will be made available to the public at a future date. The technical specifications are as follows.

The new camera is a Canon 7D Mark II digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera fitted with a Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X Pro DX II camera lens. The diagonal field of view is 104 degrees and the camera is facing due south. The imaging system is contained in an environmentally controlled housing (dew prevention, heating, cooling), and is fully provisioned for off-grid operation.

An industrial (no moving parts) quad-core Linux-based computer is co-located in the housing for image acquisition and post-processing.

Your opinion matters

In conjunction with the new imagery we will be redeveloping this webpage. We are extremely keen to get your opinion on what information is of best use for aurora watchers, and how to present it.
